Solar Batteries in Bendigo

Store the solar you generate during the day and use it at night with a battery sized for your home. We install new batteries and add storage to existing solar, with advice on backup power and getting more from what your panels produce.

For everything solar in one place, see Solar Installers Bendigo, or read our solar guides before you decide.

What's included

  • Battery sizing for backup and self-consumption
  • New installs and additions to existing solar
  • Safe, compliant storage and switchboard integration
  • Clear advice on the right fit for your system

Is a solar battery right for your home?

A battery makes the most sense when your panels produce more power during the day than you can use, and you buy a lot of power back in the evening. Instead of exporting that extra solar for a small feed-in credit, a battery stores it so you can run the lights, TV, cooking and heating after the sun goes down.

Feed-in tariffs are now far lower than they were when many Bendigo homes first went solar, so the value of using your own power has grown compared with selling it. Some people also want a battery for peace of mind during outages, or simply to rely less on the grid.

A battery is not the right fit for everyone, though. If your household uses most of its solar during the day already, or your system is quite small, other changes might give you better value first. We will look at your bills and your solar data and give you an honest view on whether storage stacks up for you.

How we size a battery

Battery size is all about your evening and overnight power use, and how much spare solar you have to fill it. We look at your usage patterns, how much your panels export on a typical day and how that changes between summer and winter in central Victoria.

A battery that is too small will run flat early in the evening, while one that is much bigger than you need can sit partly empty and cost more than it should. We also consider your plans, such as an electric vehicle, a heat pump or replacing gas appliances, since these can change your power use quite a lot. If backup power matters to you, that also affects the size and setup we recommend.

Adding a battery to your existing solar

Most existing solar systems can have a battery added. The key question is how it connects with the inverter you already have. In plain terms, there are two main approaches.

A hybrid setup uses a single inverter that manages both your panels and your battery. If your current inverter is ageing or too small, replacing it with a hybrid inverter can be a tidy way to bring everything together. An AC coupled setup adds a battery with its own inverter alongside your existing solar, which can suit systems where the current inverter is still in good shape.

We check your existing panels, inverter, switchboard and any older feed-in arrangements before recommending an option, and we explain what each one means for your day to day use. You can find more on our Batteries and Battery Upgrades pages.

Backup power: what it can and cannot run

Not every battery provides backup power automatically. For your home to keep running during a blackout, the system needs to be set up with backup capability and the right switchboard changes. We will explain whether the system you are considering can do this.

Most backup setups power selected essential circuits, such as lights, the fridge, internet and some power points. Large loads like ducted air conditioning, electric hot water, ovens or EV charging can drain a battery quickly or exceed what it can supply at once, so they are usually left off the backup circuits.

How long your backup lasts depends on how full the battery is when the power goes out and what you are running. We help you choose sensible backup circuits so the essentials keep going when you need them most.

Safe, compliant battery installation

Home batteries store a lot of energy, so they must be installed carefully and to Australian standards. Our licensed electricians handle the full installation, including correct protection, isolation and switchboard integration, then test and commission the system before we hand it over.

Where the battery goes matters too. The standards set rules about where batteries can and cannot be installed in a home, including distances from doors, windows and living areas, and manufacturers specify ventilation and temperature requirements. Bendigo summers can be very hot, so we look for a spot that is protected from direct sun and heat, such as a shaded wall or garage, while meeting every requirement.

Once installed, we show you how to read your battery app, what the different modes do and how to get the most from your stored solar.

Battery incentives and the Cheaper Home Batteries Program

The federal government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program started on 1 July 2025. It works in a similar way to the solar STC discount, with the value usually taken off the upfront price of an eligible battery rather than paid to you later. It can apply to new solar and battery systems as well as batteries added to existing solar.

The program has changed since it began. The discount is designed to step down over time, and from 1 May 2026 the rules changed so that larger batteries receive a smaller discount for each additional unit of capacity. Eligibility conditions also apply to the battery itself and to the installation.

Because the details can change, please check the current rules on the official Australian Government website before you commit, and also check Solar Victoria for any state programs that may be available. Our guide to solar rebates in Victoria covers the solar side, and we are always happy to talk through how the current incentives might apply to your home.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a battery to my existing solar?

Yes. We add and upgrade batteries on most existing systems, and advise on the right size for your usage.

Will a battery give me backup power?

A correctly configured battery can provide backup power. We will talk through what your setup needs to do that safely.

How long does a home battery last on a full charge?

It depends on the battery size and what you are running. A battery sized well for your household should cover much of your evening use on a typical day. During a blackout, running only essential circuits helps your stored power go further.

Where can a battery be installed in my home?

Australian standards set clear rules about battery locations, including distances from doors, windows and habitable rooms, and manufacturers set ventilation and temperature limits. Garages and shaded external walls are common spots. We will find a location that meets every requirement and suits your home.

Is the Cheaper Home Batteries Program discount still available?

The federal program is running, but the discount steps down over time and the rules changed on 1 May 2026, with smaller discounts for the extra capacity in larger batteries. Check the official Australian Government website for current figures and eligibility before you decide.

Can a battery work during a blackout if I already have solar?

It can, provided the battery and inverter are set up for backup and the switchboard is configured correctly. Some systems do not include backup by default, so we will confirm what yours can do before you go ahead.

Do you install batteries outside Bendigo?

Yes. We install batteries and add storage to existing solar for homes in Bendigo and the surrounding towns. Send us your details and we will let you know how we can help.
