Do I need an accredited solar installer?

Why accreditation matters for your rebate, your warranties and a safe install.

Last updated: 2026-06-20

Yes. To claim the federal STC discount, your solar system must be installed by an installer accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA), using products on the Clean Energy Council approved lists. SAA took over installer accreditation from the Clean Energy Council in 2024. Because solar is electrical work, it should also be done by a licensed electrician.

What accreditation means

Solar installer accreditation is a national standard for the people who design and install solar systems. Since 2024, that accreditation has been run by Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA), which the Clean Energy Regulator appointed to take over from the Clean Energy Council. The Clean Energy Council still maintains the approved product lists for panels, inverters and batteries.

Why it matters

It is tied to your money and your safety. A system has to be installed by an SAA-accredited installer, using approved products, to be eligible for the STC discount. Accredited, compliant installs also protect your product warranties and reduce the risk of a poor job that costs more later.

It is worth asking any installer to confirm their current accreditation, and checking that the panels, inverter and battery are on the Clean Energy Council approved lists.

A licensed electrician, too

Solar is an electrical system on your roof. Beyond solar accreditation, the work should be carried out by a licensed electrician who can integrate the system with your switchboard safely and to standard. With RB Solar & Electrical you get both trades in one local team.
